In the wake of Cyclone Nargis, tens of thousands are dead or missing, and a million are homeless. Burma's brutal and corrupt military junta failed to warn the people, failed to evacuate any areas, and suppressed freedom of communication so that Burmese people didn't know the storm was coming when the rest of the world did. Now the government, mistrustful of foreign aid, is failing to respond to the disaster and obstructing international aid organizations.Humanitarian relief is urgently needed, but we cannot depend on the junta. Today the International Burmese Monks Organization, including many leaders of the democracy protests last fall, launched a new effort to provide relief through Burma's powerful grass roots network of monasteries--the most trusted institutions in the country and currently the only source of housing and support in many devastated communities.

Relief groups scramble to aid Myanmar
Relief groups struggled to get aid to Myanmar as one U.S. diplomat warned that the death toll from the cyclone may reach more than 100,000. People turn to charities when they need help but where do charities turn when they need help? Some of the nation’s biggest charities are trying to figure that out. They report a surge in demand while their donations are slacking off. The people asking for help, though, don’t fit the profile of soup kitchens patrons. Zyklon Nargis fordert mehr als zwanzigtausend Opfer
Die Zahl der Opfer des Tropensturms am 2. und 3. Mai 2008 steigt weiter an: Die Nachrichtenagentur Reuters hat die Zahl der Totesopfer inzwischen auf mehr als 22.000 nach oben korrigiert. Etwa 40.000 Menschen zählen als vermisst. Mehr als 1 Million Menschen sind durch den Sturm obdachlos geworden, vermuten die Vereinten Nationen.

7. Mai 2008. Der Wirbelsturm Nargis zerstörte am vergangenen Samstag weite Teile des Irrawaddy-Deltas in Birma / Myanmar. Die internationale Hilfe konnte erst schleppend anlaufen, denn die Militärdiktatur hat das bitterarme Land bisher abgeschottet. Erst zwei Tage nach der Katastrophe hat die Regierung zugesagt, ausländische Hilfe für die Opfer des Wirbelsturms ins Land zu lassen.Direkte Hilfe konnten in den ersten Tagen nur lokale Organisationen leisten. So verteilen die birmesischen Caritas-Partner in drei Diözesen Hilfsgüter wie Trinkwasser und Lebensmittel und haben in ihren Pfarreien, Gemeindehäusern und Büros Notunterkünfte eingerichtet. Caritas-Organisationen aus mehreren Ländern wie u.a. Australien, Italien oder Bagladesch unterstützen die lokalen Partner in Birma / Myanmar. Caritas international stellt 50.000 Euro Soforthilfe für die Zyklon-Opfer in Birma für den Kauf von Trinkwasser, Lebensmitteln und Medikamenten bereit. Die Hilfe wird über ein Team von Malteser international und lokale Caritas-Partner in dem Land verteilt.
Das Hilfswerk der deutschen Caritas ruft die Bevölkerung angesichts des Ausmaßes der Katastrophe dringend zu Spenden auf.

Als dringlichste Aufgabe sehen Caritas international und seine lokalen Partner an, den Ausbruch von Krankheiten zu verhindern. Nach wie vor ist es für die internationalen Helfer aufgrund von Stromengpässen und einer restriktiven Informationspolitik der Regierung jedoch schwierig, exakte Informationen über das Ausmaß der Katastrophe zu erhalten. Lokale Caritas-Partner rechnen aufgrund der ersten Informationen damit, dass das Engagement nach dem Zyklon mehrere Monate, wenn nicht Jahre andauern wird. Das am stärksten betroffene Irrawaddy-Delta gilt traditionell als Reiskammer Birmas, dem Land mit dem höchsten Pro-Kopf-Verbrauch an Reis weltweit. Die lokalen Caritas-Partner befürchten deshalb schwerwiegende langfristige Auswirkungen auf die Versorgungslage in Birma.
Die Ankündigung der birmesischen Regierung, internationale Helfer ins Land zu lassen, wird von Caritas international ausdrücklich begrüßt, allerdings aufgrund der Erfahrungen der Vergangenheit auch mit Skepsis aufgenommen. Lokale Caritas-Partner hoffen, dass die Regierung alle zur Verfügung stehenden Kapazitäten nutzen, um den Opfer des Zyklons zu helfen.
